My (Self-Proclaimed) Princess Story

Ladies and gents, stand up and praise the Princess.For tonight, I'd sleep on a bed of nails.

 Look at this stuff, I still have a lot to do but ITM blogpost will be on top of everything! 

 THIS! This is how much I am loving my ITM experience!

So, how do I start this post as a Communication Arts student?
It must be some sort of an introduction where I tell you who I am, my age and my skills.

But that's not how a CA student does it.

I'm Yna Paulene and people should never misspell my first name! If you're not sure how to spell it, play safely and call me Princess.

Here's a list of a couple of things for you to understand my personality:

• I don't eat pasta, pizza and burgers. JUST DON'T ASK ME WHY.
• I easily get irritated and annoyed when I'm hungry.
• I like the color orange.
• People think I'm a lesbian. I am NOT. Seriously? Baah. I'm secretly crushing on this guy you know. hihi. :">

So why did I end my list with something cheesy? In PR class I've learned that people would most likely remember the sensual content of an advertisement or a public release than the real essence of your campaign. So, at least you remembered something about me.

Then here comes my not-so-favorite subject, Integrated Marketing Communications, but it's my major subject. I love the research, pitching and production part, but the time constraint would always do the talking. I'm trying my best not to procrastinate but it's really getting harder and harder and darker each day.

Then you get the point? As a senior CA student, the horror of thesis and other practical requirements piling up at the near-end of the semester. Then the ITM competition, the thesis defense, the PR plan defense and the short film festival... and then I just stare at the list of requirements to finish...

But I don't think you'll ever get my point by merely writing in words, so I compiled a couple of personally made GIFS to make a story short.

When there's food, I'm like,

Then I look at my bedroom wall only to find the the long list of school requirements (juxtaposed my super junior poster)

Then I remember the deadline is tomorrow and I haven't finished anything,

But I sleep, like a stoic believer. And wake up in the morning,

Run to school

and just laugh it all off because I haven't done anything.

Who cares?

I am this awesome

And I can just wear my crown and carry on.

And yeah, I am a senseless blogger wasting your time to finish this.
And yeah, I won't tell you anything about my agency's plan for the competition because it is SERIOUSLY a CONFIDENTIAL IDEA THAT MATTER.
But we just finished the branded content today and we're off to a rainbow's end.

One more thing!
The DEM concept photo will still be the winner!
Mark my word, I'm competitive this way!

And yeah, I am just so narcissistic I put all my faces in different colors, clothes and facial expressions because I love DEM.

Need some company?

Are you that kind of person who likes to be in total silence when reading? or the one who likes to have some kind of music accompanying you, playing in the background? If you like music jiving with you while reading, you might like my artist recommendations. However if you enjoy the silence (like in Depeche Mode's hit), Just read!

So, Just to share, I really love reading while listening to music. There were times that as if the music I'm listening to while reading actually helps me understand the story more,perhaps because it helps set up the mood. But then again, it could also be a cause of your reading distraction. Just imagine, reading a Mitch Albom book then have songs by Korn as your background music... well, obviously that's stupid common sense already, besides who listens to Korn while reading a book? if you are one, I congratulate you :)

Now, so what is this post about again? Oh yeah, music to play while reading. Right. So first things first, who are the artists that will help you feel the story better?

• Ellie Goulding- This British chick's songs are poetry dancing in addictive melodies. Her voice is ethereal, perfect for novels that makes you wonder, sets you forth to an enchanted kingdom and calm your hearts. From all of her songs, the best reading companion song I love to play is "fighter plane" which is sad but will give you an unexplained smile plastered on your face.

• Daniel Merriweather- Aside from the fact that I find him hot (hihihi), he actually has a good voice-not the usual pop-sy kind. Also from what I've noticed from his songs, he's very versatile. From his angst-ridden "Stop me" (which is a collaboration with Mark Ronson) to a hopeful "A little bit better" (soundtrack from the movie Arthur), listening to his voice while reading would be a sure delight :)

• Lykke Li- Not only can she sing, she can dance too, no wonder one of her song's title is "Dance,Dance,Dance". Lykke Li's voice may sound weird to others, but she's a true artist. Her lyrics has this weird factor that makes it very legit and relatable. BTW, If you ever find yourself grabbing a copy of the Hunger Games trilogy by Susan Collins, make sure to listen to her song "Tonight", because it fits really well to the story.

• The Hoosiers- These lads from England will surely make you go "Run Rabbit Run". I like the voice of their vocalist Irwin Sparkes because he can go falsetto and could make a girl doubt her own girly falsetto :) Anyway, this band's playful sound is perfect for reading humorous adventure stories. However don't play their version of "We didn't start the fire" or else you'll find yourself singing instead of reading.

• Sia Furler- Australian.Artsy.Authenthic. Three words that best describe her and her music (oh wait, how do I know if a music is Australian-sounding? D:). "You will be loved" is the perfect song for that tearjerker page in Alice Sebold's The Lovely Bones, or you could spin "Bring Night" while reading a Sophie Kinsella novel.

There's soooo many more I'd like to share, but let's prolly stop at these 5 great artists. Hopefully those who like to listen to music would find this post a bit helpful in a way, while to those who enjoy the silence while indulging a good book I hope I somehow make you want to try listen to music while finishing that piece of Tolstoy you're clutching :)

Hey I just met you

Yup, won't stop with all the quotes. On my almost 2-hour travel time on my way home, I realized that my earphones were not with me, the movie on the bus was *not my type*, and I couldn't sleep so I just thought about random people and random things about them.

I realized that every person we meet in our life has something to teach us. Some people are going to be in your life to make you feel happy, special, hurt, and some other roller coaster of emotions. Whether it's a good thing or not, they have taught you something and that will always be a part of who you are. During my junior year, we had this prof whom the whole class really loved dearly, except for the loads of readings he assigns per meeting. And when I say loads, I mean LOADS. Some readings just for one meeting are two inches thick. Anyway, what did this prof teach us? Aside from political stuff, he also taught us discipline in so many ways possible. I also got the privilege to work under one of ABS-CBN's big bosses, and he taught me how to get a perfect result in a work-give your best. Wherever you go, go with all your heart. I have this friend who's always in a panic mode and it taught me one thing: I just need to be chill, like what I really am. Because if everybody else is on panic mode, what will happen to the world? 

I don't need to go over every person I met who taught me something to justify the quote above. Ask yourself what your most terror prof taught you. Or your mean neighbor, your number one critic, a special person in your life-who can't stay in your life, anybody. You might be surprised with how much you have learned from these people, and also ask yourself what have you been teaching other people? What experience are you giving them?

I once read in a book, that there are only two kinds of people in this word: a teacher and a student. Most of us are both. So ask yourself, have you been a good teacher/student to others lately?

Hmm recently, my ITM friends taught me to.. have fun while working I guess? Earlier tonight, we shared this very special *moment* about balloons, face paint and banderitas that made our tummies ache but that's okay. Wink wink! Hello Nicole, Glenda & Franc! :-) What's with the balloons? Stay tuned and find out next week!

Commuting: Easier Said Than Done

Does sitting, or standing, in place for at least an hour, closely surrounded by people you don't know, with the air-conditioning either non-existent or turned all the way up sound appealing to you? If yes, you're either lying or a masochist. That is what I, and I'm sure countless other Thomasians, encounter every day as we make our way to our homes to the University and back. This numbing experience is augmented by a number of factors that are beyond your control: traffic, rain, or worst of all, a really slow driver.

You might be asking; "It's not so bad, right? At least you're getting some rest."

Here's the deal: Commuting, especially if your trip lasts for about an hour, is exhausting. It doesn't matter if you're on a jeep, FX or bus; it will tire you out, guaranteed. Sitting in the same, cramped and cold (or hot) place for a long period of time just takes a lot out from you.

Much more if you're standing up on the congested aisle of a bus, at night. Oh and you can't sleep properly. Those seats aren't designed for optimal comfort. Even if you do manage to sneak in a couple of Zzz's, expect a stiff neck to come with it. Also, the radio is probably turned up to its maximum level, and it's tuned in to one of those irritating stations that play nothing but novelty songs.

So what exactly is the point of this blog post? Well, I guess I'd just like to say how much I hate commuting. While I enjoyed my stay in UST, I really dislike how much I travel to and from the University. Next time you set out for UST, make sure that you're ready;  Ready for a long, unpleasant and bumpy ride.

A-Game

"If patience does not seem to work, you aren't using enough of it."

I am a huge fan of motivational quotes and whenever I feel tired or disappointed, I always get my favorite buddy, my journal and flip over a few pages to find myself a nice quote to get me going. We've been having too many long weekends but because of the cancellation of classes, school works are also being doubled. As a senior Communication Arts student, time really is gold and we need to learn how to prioritize and balance things. Whatever happens, deadlines are still deadlines. We have to meet them no matter how much pressure we encounter or no matter what circumstance we'll be facing. And so we need to assess our game play--we can finish our tasks on time so that we can avoid being a sleepless grumpy person or we can bum around and feel the world crumbling down towards the end of the day. 

So aside from IMC and ITM training us to be creative, a critical thinker, I think one of the most important thing it teaches us is PATIENCE. Just what we need to get our works done--competently, and simply just what we need to get by. Loosen up! As they say, a man of patience is a master of everything else Enjoy the long weekend!

No Room For Cliché

Light bulb for ideas, circle for eternity, eagle for freedom, well I can say those were all clichés. We try to make our lives easier by sticking to what comes to our mind first, but the truth is the first idea is not always the best. We must let our mind reach the unreachable, to understand the unfathomable, to innovate the unsophisticated in order to survive this world full of competitions. There is no room for concepts which has been overused to the point of losing its original meaning or effect.

            I just can’t forget the first ITM meeting we had when Sir Velez asked us to make three different themes and concept for this upcoming event. We had a hard time in choosing the brand but it was much harder for us to think of what will be the theme of ITM this year. After five hours of thinking Sir Velez came to check on our ideas and concept. While I was reading the list he suddenly interrupted me and said “That’s so easy! That is for high school students. I want something new, something fresh for everyone”. The five hours of extracting our minds went in vain so easily.

            But then I realized if we insisted of what we first thought, we will not be able to come up with better ideas like what we have now. ITM with the guidance of Sir Velez trained us not to show “something ordinary” but instead be the promoters of “something extraordinary.” So there is no room for clichés because our ideas do matter.

The Preface

Another day, another “hooray, no classes” moment yet again for us students. So far, the long weekend’s not so seemingly a picnic, as it is eaten up totally by unattended homework and very delayed preliminary exams to be studied for. As for us, the ITM participants, the run of the mill to-dos don’t stop at our class’ basic requirements, as we have an extra load on our hands. It’s no laughing matter, and I bet our “agency” isn’t the only one racking its creative juices for great photoshoot concepts.

As of now, the additional members are still a no-show, and due to the bipolar tropical depressions and such presiding over our area of responsibility, many a suspension has been made, so our agency meeting is constantly being cancelled and/or rescheduled. Coming from different colleges, the time and communication barrier is one of the greatest obstacles we have to face, or rather, learn to work around, in order to communicate our individual ideas well – but that’s quite alright, since we all realize that this is part of the training for the real thing; I mean, really, not all my future co-workers will just conveniently live in the same district as me. That’s part of the learning process: meeting people, being flexible, and above all, COMPROMISE. Social networking is not enough, because nothing beats actuality – that’s why our long overdue meeting will push through tomorrow on the 22^nd, with or without the additional members. This is just to get the members acquainted and to pass on the mental wavelengths so we could get a same train of thought and create more cohesive ideas.

Hoping for a positive first meeting! And I hope our conflicting schedules make way for ITM and its various tasks. May we alleviate procrastination during this hectic time, and shove idleness into the corner. Espiritu ng kasipagan, sapian Niyo po kami.

Cracking Has Never Been This Fun

Whether you split it, you pop it or you break it, it’s all the same. Cracking, for some of us shows a start or a beginning which leads to fun. The word crack is sometimes synonymous to fun. Fun only starts when you crack your ideas. When we crack it, we start it.

This year, the annual Ideas That Matter IMC competition takes it to another level. As we introduce this year’s IMC Advocacy competition entitled “CRACKED, Cracking the Big Idea.”. So get ready, crack it up and have some fun as we only have 5 more weeks before the said event.

So are you ready for this year’s Ideas That Matter IMC Advocacy Competition? Are you ready to crack it? Well, you must be. Because if you’re not down with that, we’ve just got two words for you, CRACK IT!
